Frequent, prolonged sucking can gradually shift the front teeth and shape the roof of the mouth, which may affect the bite and, sometimes, tongue posture and certain speech sounds. The earlier and more gently you help your child move on, the less likely lasting effects become. If you're concerned, your dentist or a myofunctional therapist can take a look.
Non-food chewing is very common and usually isn't "naughty" — it's often a sensory or oral-motor need. Chewing can help some children feel calm, focused, and regulated. Understanding the why lets you meet the need gently, rather than just trying to stop the behavior.
It's a gentle approach that supports the muscles and habits of the mouth and face — things like tongue posture, lip closure, and calm nasal breathing. At Happy Little Mouths, these principles shape our shame-free approach: we help replace comfort habits with soothing, healthier patterns like nasal breathing.
